Do you think our neighborhood is simply becoming more and more homogenized, a kind of suburban strip mall of corporate chains without any hint of its former distinctiveness? Well, just wait!
Here comes another 7-Eleven.
In the spring, Kosher restaurant Darna at 89th Street and Columbus closed up shop; it had had some problems with the health department in the past, but it’s not clear that that was the problem. It’s been vacant since then, but earlier this week West Side Rag reader John sent in the above picture of construction at the site. After discussing it with the contractors, he learned the space is slated for the Upper West Side’s second 7-Eleven. The first is on Amsterdam between 92nd and 93rd Street.
Our tipster reminded us that the store is right down the street from a public school and Smart Toddler Daycare — if it’s within 200 feet it won’t be allowed to sell alcohol under state law.
But Slurpees? Oh yes, there will be Slurpees.

Too bad about Darna, but it had its problems. As for selling alcohol, it probably won’t be a problem for the 7-Eleven. The Amsterdam Av. one is down the street from a synagogue; it either is more than 200 ft., or doesn’t sell alcohol yet does okay business apparently.
