Notices:
For those observing, Happy Rosh Hashanah! The holiday starts tonight, and there are some unique events going on in the neighborhood, including a public blowing of the shofar (ram’s horn) hosted by Chabad in Central Park’s Naumberg Bandshell from 5 p.m. until 6 p.m. (If you register for the event, Trader Joe’s will have a gift waiting in the park for you. Oh, so now you want to be Jewish!). (UPDATE: this event actually takes place Thursday. Sorry!) Also, Romenu, a holistic center at 308 West 92nd Street, offers Rosh Hashanah yoga.
News:
Sam Zell, the controversial and outspoken Chicago developer who bought the Tribune Company (which shortly afterwards fell into bankruptcy), is now taking over a stalled development site on the Upper West Side. His company Equity Residential plans to builds a tower at 170 Amsterdam Avenue between 66th and 67th Streets. (NY Post)
The Central Park Conservancy, after finishing its decades-long project to rehabilitate all of the park’s lawns, is now moving on to playgrounds. There are 21 playgrounds in the park and many were built in the 1930’s. The conservancy has established a set of priorities for the new playgrounds. We’d like to add one more: ask parents what they think! (Separately, the conservancy is currently surveying people about what events they enjoy here.)
The MTA now offers cell phone service on certain subway platforms (none on the Upper West Side yet). Service will be offered at Columbus Circle within the next year. (NY1)
