The Department of Transportation recently converted some old parking meters to bike racks on Columbus Avenue, attaching shiny silver circles onto the poles. They look somewhat like ancient alien symbols brought to earth for an M. Night Shyamalan movie, meaning the aliens will soon be here and will turn the Upper West Side into a cornfield. But at least rents will be cheaper.
In all seriousness, I’ll gladly raise a glass to creative reuse. Here here, DOT.
The racks were approved last year by the community board, and have begun to be installed in various parts of the city this summer.
